I found this the attic of a home in Mt Carmel Pennsylvania. Very old. The daughter of the deceased told me it belonged to her great aunt. The daughter was in her 80s. Do the math!!! Probably late1800s

I cannot date this item but I do know it is a friction cleaner. You push it forward and it works like those toy cars that you push fast over and over until they go by themselves. You can see the plate

 

A gorgeous pair of Cahill cast brass (bronze ?) andirons, with what appears to be hammered aluminum 'third leg's/stands' on the back. They have a hammered 'key' look to them and the patina is amazing.
